The Problem
Pensioners often withdraw less than they could because they fear running out of money (FORO) and have knowledge gap when it comes to planning their Super.
Prior to Vanguard's Superannuation rollout across Australia, the business was notified of the ‘Retirement Income Legislation.’
The requirement: to offer an ‘optimal’ drawdown rate to their members based on an 85% success chance that their payments would last throughout retirement, in the form of an advice module.

How I Started
💡
Investment Analysts
To give an accurate rate with an 85% success chance, the projection had to run through some 10,000 different market scenarios and consisted of many inputs.
💡
Competitive Analysis
The majority focuses on pre-retirement planning, lacks visual appeal, integration with payment setup, and clarity.
Results are vague due to public, non-fund-specific variables, with little education on next steps.

🔎
• Hesitant to change payments, as long as there’s money elsewhere
• Living cost is a growing concern
• Longevity risk is a growing concern
• Life expectancy challenging to grasp
Define
Based on key insights from retirees, I quickly put ideas to paper, laying out the user journey from the dashboard to the final projection and mapped out the key features in a effort/value matrix.
Define
This scenario focuses on a member receiving a projection that falls short of their expectations, with payments not meeting their desired living standard.

Understood the visualisation of drawdown and market fluctuation
Found the lifestyle benchmark useful but felt it lacked specifics.
Appreciated the auto-adjust feature, even if they weren’t planning to take out lump sums.
Mistook the drawdown type for investment returns or were unsure.
Design iteration
Final design
In the end, I handed over my designs to the broader design team and functional specs to the engineers. While I stayed true to the existing design system, I modernised certain aspects to set a new tone for mobile-first design, which was appreciated by the stakeholders.
